Albany State completes Elimination Friday in Div II Softball Regionals

All three HBCUs bite the dust

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Arkansas-Monticello took advantage of seven Albany State errors to score six unearned runs in defeating the Golden Rams 9-7 in an elimination game of the NCAA Division II Softball South Region Tournament Friday afternoon at the VSU Softball Complex.

Albany State (30-37) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Mindy Mager walked to open the game and advanced to second on a Ricci Carter sacrifice bunt. After a ground out, Ta'Shelya Bynum singled to left to plate Mager for a 1-0 ASU lead.

UAM (46-19) got five runs off the first three Golden Ram errors in the bottom of the first. A Meredith Heckel fly ball was dropped by Carter in left to open the frame, allowing Heckel to reach second, before Carleen Clark dropped a fly ball by Sarah Reed to allow Heckel to score. A Jenny Dunn ground ball was thrown wide of the bag at first to put two men on before Kate Brady reached on a walk. Gemma Gibson and Kayla Temple followed with RBI base hits before Lauren Brooks was hit by a pitch to force in Brady. Joleah Oxner walked to force in the final run to give the Cotton Blossoms a 5-1 advantage.

Arkansas-Monticello added another run in the second as Dunn tripled t lead off the inning and scored when Gibson's bunt attempt was thrown wide of the bag at first.

The Golden Rams cut their deficit to 6-2 in the fourth as Bynum tripled with one out and scored on a Djara Grays double, before scoring two more runs in the fifth. With one out in the frame, Tiffany Peterson singled and scored as Mager followed with a double to left. An Erica King bunt single moved Mager to third, allowing her to score on a Danielle Dawsey base hit cutting the Cotton Blossom lead to 6-4.

UAM scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to push its lead back to 9-4. Brooks singled to open the inning and moved to second as Joleah Oxner followed with a base knock. A bunt hit by Terri Rodgers loaded the bases, allowing Heckel to drive in Brooks with a single. Reed followed with a ground ball to second base, but the throw by Peterson was high, allowing Oxner to score. Dunn collected the final RBI as her fielder's choice scored Rodgers.

The Golden Rams closed out the scoring in the seventh as Mager led off with a bunt single and scored when Dawsey hit a towering home run over the left field wall. Bynum followed with a single moved to second on a Grays base hit. Shari Golden followed with a double to right to plate Bynum, but Grays was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the game.

UAM's Alison North gave up 14 hits and seven runs while striking out six in seven innings to improve to 18-4. Eight different Cotton Blossoms collected a hit in the game.

Mager allowed eight hits and nine runs, only three of which were earned, in six innings. She walked two and struck out five as she fell to 19-14. Mager, Bynum and Peterson registered two hits each to lead the Golden Rams.

"I don't think we could have played any worse on defense today, said Albany State coach Robert Skinner." "When you commit seven errors in a game, you're not going to beat anyone in the country. Its not the way we wanted to end our season, but I am proud of this team and what it accomplished this season."
