Lock Haven blanks Bowie State in Round One of Softball Regionals

(KUTZTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA) Today marked the first ever NCAA softball regional appearance for Bowie State University and the Lady Bulldogs faced the daunting task of going up against the defending national champions of Lock Haven University. In the end, Lock Haven snapped Bowie State’s 20-game winning streak, shutting out Bowie State by the score of 8-0.
Lock Haven (46-3) pushed two runs across in the bottom of the 1st inning and were never threatened. The Lady Eagles recorded their third run of the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning when BSU’s Ashley Cook mishandled a ground ball, scoring Erica Eisenbise from third.
Lock Haven’s Ilia Lopez belted a three-run bomb over the center field fence in the bottom of the 3rd inning, giving the Lady Eagles a commanding 6-0 advantage. Amanda Roosa slapped a single to left center in the bottom of the 4th inning, scoring Stephanie Wydra from second, extending Lock Haven’s lead to 7-0.
Bowie State junior pitcher Jillian Willey (15-5) loaded the bases in the bottom half of the 5th inning and LHU’s Roosa hit a single through the right side, scoring Missy Kurian to close out the game. Lock Haven roughed up Willey for nine hits with Roosa leading the way with four.
Kristin Erb (33-2) held Bowie State hitless, striking out eight and led Lock Haven to the victory. “They (Lock Haven) are truly the better team but I think we’ll be in pretty good shape for tomorrow’s game,” said BSU head coach Fred Burroughs.
Bowie State (27-8) will face the Shippensburg University “Lady Raiders” at 9:00 a.m. Friday (5/11) in the losers bracket
of this double-elimination regional. Shippensburg (29-23) dropped a 4-0 decision to East Stroudsburg University.
