NCAA Div II softball selections announced

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will participate in the 2007 NCAA Division II Softball Regional Championships and three HBCUs are in the field. Play begins Thursday (5/10) at designated regional sites.

CIAA Champ Bowie State and SIAC Titleist Albany State received automatic bids. North Carolina Central was selected at-large.

The CIAA Champion Lady Bulldogs are seeded 8th in the Mid-Atlantic Region and will face the region's top seed, the Lady Eagles of Lock Haven (PA) University.

Bowie State will enter the regional with a record of 27-7 while Lock Haven, the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champion and defending national champion, come into the game with a record of 45-3.

North Carolina Central University will participate in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship for the second straight year and second time in school history when the No. 6 seed Lady Eagles play third-seeded Bloomsburg University, at 3 p.m. in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

NCCU (31-11) qualified for the eight-team, double-elimination regional tournament by receiving am at-large bid, after being upset in the CIAA tournament.

Bloomsburg (35-13) who is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship, received an at-large bid as well after falling to Mid-Atlantic Regional No. 1 seed Lock Haven University.

Regional play begins Thursday with East Stroudsburg (#4) taking on Shippensburg (#5) at 9:00am followed by BSU and LU at 11:30am. Bloomsburg (#3) will battle with North Carolina Central (#6) in the third game of the day at 2:00pm and host Kutztown (#2) will face Edinboro (#7) at 4:30pm.

Albany State, who captured their second Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) softball championship title, will make their second appearance in the South Region Tournament. The tournament is hosted by Valdosta State University at the North Campus Softball Complex in Valdosta, Ga.

The Lady Rams, who enter the tournament as the number eighth seed, will face the #1 Valdosta State Lady Blazers at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. In other regional play, the third-ranked Florida Gulf Coast University plays #6 Rollins College at 11 a.m. Gulf South Conference champion University of Alabama-Huntsville, which enters the tournament as the second seed, matches up against #7 Barry University at 1:30 p.m. while #4 Florida Southern College, the Sunshine State Conference champion, and #5 University of Arkansas-Monticello meet at 4:00 p.m.

Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in double-elimination tournaments to determine the final eight championship participants. Regional competition will be held May 10-14. Winners will advance to the finals hosted by Ashland University May 17-21, at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
