Prairie View A&M repeats as SWAC Baseball Champion

JACKSON, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M Panthers successfully defended their 2006 Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball title by defeating the Southern Jaguars 8-7 in Saturday’s 2007 Championship game.

Joshua Terrell got the win for the Panthers. He saw two inning of work, giving up two hits. Josh Lara saw one inning of work, striking out three straight batters in the ninth inning. Wrandal Taylor started for Prairie View. In six innings of work he faced 23 batters and gave up four hits and seven runs, while striking out six.

Baron Short suffered the loss for Southern. He went six innings, giving up five hits, eight runs and four strikeouts.
The Panthers (34-23) finished with five hits and seven RBI and the Jags had six hits and seven RBI. Calvin Lester led the Panther offense, going 2-3 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Greg Ford went 1-4 with a run and two RBI. Wilford White and Brandon Kendricks each recorded a hit, a runs and an RBI.

Juan Mendoza led Southern’s offense, going 2-4 with a run and RBI. Brad McDavid went 2-3 with a run scored.

Prairie View’s Odie Davis, Calvin Lester, Wrandal Taylor along with Southern’s Victor Franklin, Brad McDavid, Michael Thomas and Joshua Kirk were all named to the 2007 SWAC All-Tournament Team. Lester was named Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
