May 17, 2007
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior left-handed pitcher Frank Gailey tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout to lift West Chester to a 2-0 victory over No. 23 West Virginia State in the opening game of the 2007 NCAA North Atlantic Regional at North Campus Field in Kutztown, Pa., Thursday morning.
Gailey (6-2) stifled the Yellow Jackets’ batters all afternoon, striking out nine and holding down a team that brought a .361 combined batting average into the postseason. Gailey struck out two in the bottom of the ninth, sandwiched around an infield single, and then got the Jackets’ leading hitter, Brandon Halstead, to pop out to end the game.
“He had a lot of success going fastball, changeup early,” West Chester head coach Greg Mamula said. “But, late in the game, he was mainly throwing fastballs. His last pitch of the game was 89 miles per hour.”
West Chester (31-15) used a two-run fourth inning to slap West Virginia State ace Michael Barron (8-1) with his first loss of the season. The Yellow Jackets, seeded second in the North Atlantic Regional, fell to 36-16 and will take on the loser of No. 1 Kutztown vs. No. 6 Shippensburg, which is set to begin at 12:30 p.m., at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
West Chester, seeded fifth in the region, takes on the winner of California (Pa.) vs. Slippery Rock on Friday at 4 p.m. The win also guarantees the Golden Rams of a game on Saturday.
Matt Cotellese singled up the middle with two outs, scoring Mark Gilliford, and Connor Thorp later drew a bases loaded walk to provide all of the scoring the Rams would need in the fourth frame.
Gilliford finished 2-for-4 as West Chester rapped out six hits total in the contest.
