WSSU names Hunter as Head Volleyball Coach

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State University Athletics has hired Douglas Hunter as head coach of the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams Volleyball team as announced by Director of Athletics Chico Caldwell. Hunter comes to the Rams program from North Carolina Central where he was an assistant coach.

Hunter takes the reins from former volleyball head coach Lataya Hilliard-Gray who moves on to lead the WSSU softball program. Hilliard-Gray spent four years leading the Lady Rams volleyball program leading the team to a 35-97 record during her tenure.

With 12 seasons of NCAA experience, Hunter brings a wealth of knowledge to the WSSU sidelines and will guide a youthful WSSU squad that features no seniors and five newcomers.

Prior to leading his arival at WSSU, Hunter spent five seasons as an assistant with the NCCU Lady Eagles program where he helped guide the team to CIAA championships in 2004, 2005, and 2006. He also spent time as an assistant coach at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina where he helped guide the CIAA championship teams in 1997, 2000, and 2001.

Hunter will make his head coaching debut on August 28th when the Lady Rams take on the Campbell Camels in a season-opening road match in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Hunter will make his home coaching debut on September 4th when the Lady Rams take on the Gardner Webb Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. at the C.E. Gaines Center on the campus of Winston-Salem State University.
