UAPB names new athletics director
July 26, 2007
The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff has named Louis "Skip" Perkins as athletics director. Perkins has agreed to a three-year contract to take over the school's 15-sport program.
Chosen from a field of 12 candidates to replace Craig Curry whose contract was not renewed in June, Perkings comes to UAPB from N.C. Central University where he had been director of athletic development since April, 2006. Prior to that he was director of communications and external affairs at Saint Augustine's College from January 2005 to April 2006. He was director of university relations for Major Broadcasting Cable Network for four years before joining the staff at St. Aug.
“Being an athletic director at a historically black college at 35 years old is a dream come true and it’s also a challenge, but it’s a challenge I know I can be successful at because I have excitement and a drive to do the job,” Perkins told the Arkansas Commercial Staff newspaper. “I’ve been around black college sports my whole life and I’m a high-energy type of person and anyone who gets a chance to meet me will know that I won’t get outworked. There might be a few lumps because the learning curve is tough but I’m committed to UAPB and to being in Pine Bluff for many years to help take this athletic department to the next level.”
A former collegiate tennis player, Perkins becomes one of the youngest athletic directors in NCAA Division I.
