July 15, 2010
The "Rumble in the Swamp" will pit the Albany State Golden Rams against the Savannah State University Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 25, in Waycross, Ga. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Waycross Memorial Stadium. The classic is sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Southeast Georgia, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Valdosta, Inc.
The classic was officially announced at the “Rumble in the Swamp” kickoff luncheon and press conference on Wednesday (July 14) at the stadium and Holiday Inn in Waycross.
“We are excited about the Rumble in the Swamp between the Albany State Golden Rams and the Savannah State Tigers” said Melvin Johnson, chairman of the classic committee and member of the 100 Black Men. “After several years of planning, we have finally brought the classic to fruition.”
L-R: SSU Head Football Coach Julius Dixon, SSU Athletics Director Marilyn Suggs, ASU Athletics Director Richard H. Williams and ASU Asst Coach Rickey Alexander.
In welcoming the group of more than 50 organizers, fans and university representatives to Waycross, Mayor Clarence Billups, also a member of the 100 Black Men, said, “The classic is great for both universities. This is the start of something big for the universities and the community.”
Representing the ASU football program was Assistant Coach Rickey Alexander, who said the Golden Rams are ready for great football action against the Tigers.
“We are excited about having Savannah State back on the schedule. Anytime we play the Tigers, you can expect a very hard-hitting, physical game. You can expect a hard-fought game and nothing less,” Alexander said. “We’re ready to let you see the Rams and how the Rams work it!”
ASU Interim Athletics Director Richard H. Williams said he too is excited about adding a classic game to ASU’s 2010 schedule.
"The Golden Rams are ready to kickoff the 2010 season and we are excited about the idea of adding another classic game against Savannah State," Williams said. “The 100 Black Men of Southeast Georgia and Valdosta have done a tremendous job of putting together an event which will not only benefit both schools, but provide great gridiron action.”
Savannah State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, is the only non-conference opponent on the Golden Rams' 10-game schedule. The Golden Rams and Tigers played in the Music City Classic in Macon, Ga. from 1991 until 2004.
