(Raleigh, NC) – Shaw University today announced that it has hired Douglas Hunter as Head Volleyball Coach. Hunter most recently served as volleyball coach for Winston-Salem State.

“He is a perfect fit for this program,” said Interim Athletic Director Marcus Clarke. “He has a vast knowledge of the sport, and is no stranger to the CIAA.”

Hunter has over 30 years of volleyball coaching experience, including four years at WSSU where he amassed a 12-82 record. He has also served as an assistant coach at both North Carolina Central and Saint Augustine’s.

“I have been aware of Shaw for a very long time,” Hunter said of Shaw. “It has always been one of the places I felt I could come in and have an impact on. Despite the late start, I plan to hit the ground running.

Hunter, a native of Jamaica, holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Saint Augustine’s. Prior to entering the coaching ranks, he played volleyball on the international level, including ten years with the Jamaica Volleyball Association where he earned numerous honors, including awards for Best Middle Blocker, Best Defensive Player, and Best Passer.

Hunter replaces Laura Aker who resigned after the 2009 campaign. In 2009, the Lady Bears were 13-11 overall and 7-8 in the CIAA.
