Football game between Tennessee State and Southern scrappedDecember 22, 2000Plans for Tennessee State University to play Southern University in football during the 2001 season have been scrapped. The proposed game, set for August 25th in New Orleans, was not granted an early waiver from the NCAA. "The home team (Southern) must get a waiver from the NCAA to play a game prior to September 1st." said Dr. Jim Smith, TSU athletic director, "Southern was unable to get that early waiver from the NCAA for this proposed game." Smith went on, "We are actively negotiating to resume the Tennessee State - Southern series in the 2002 season." With the departure of Western Kentucky football from the Ohio Valley Conference, Tennessee State is in the process of re-working their 2001 schedule. Western Kentucky would have occupied the October 6th home date on the TSU schedule. On that date In 2001, Tennessee State will play Howard University at the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana. "We feel it is important to keep our fans and alumni informed about our (2001) schedule," says Smith. "Many people have expressed their desire to make their travel plans arrangements for next football season." "We hope to have the schedule finalized shortly.. Presently, TSU has nine opponents on the 2001 schedule, with three dates still under active negotiation with possible opponents. The 2001Tennessee State football schedule
