Magic City to host SWAC Basketball Tourney

January 8, 2001

BIRMINGHAM -- The city of Birmingham took another giant leap towards becoming "the Magic City" for the Southwestern Athletic Conference when it was announced on Monday that the semifinals and finals of the league's annual post-season basketball tournament would be played here next March.

For the past two years, Birmingham has played host to the HealthSouth SWAC Football Championship and on February 1, 2000, the 10-member conference completed its move from New Orleans, La. to its new headquarters at the A.G. Gaston Building in the historic Civil Rights District.

"We're thrilled to bring another major SWAC event to this city," said SWAC commissioner Rudy Washington. "We've been highly impressed with the level of interest in our conference from city officials, SWAC alumni and fans alike. The local community here has supported us and we want to reciprocate by being a major play maker in the college sports entertainment business. This is just the beginning of a mutually beneficial marriage."

The first round games of the SWAC men's and women's tournaments will be played on the campuses of the four highest seeded teams on Tuesday, March 6. The winners will advance to the semifinals at Fair Park Arena on the Alabama State Fairgrounds on Friday, March 9. The men's championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 with the women's championship to tip off 30 minutes after completion of the men's title game.

Tickets to the Birmingham games of the SWAC tournament will be $20 for a weekend pass for all games, $10 for individual sessions and $5 for children and students with proper identification.

While the final details of the agreement to bring the tournament to Birmingham are still being finalized, Washington said he expects to sign a two-year deal with the city with options for two additional years.
