SWAC suspends Alabama State and Alcorn State women's basketball players

January 26, 2001

BIRMINGHAM -- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced the suspension of one women's basketball player from Alabama State University and another from Alcorn State University as a result of their participation in a fight near the conclusion of Monday night's game in Montgomery.

Nichole Miller, a junior guard at Alabama State, has been suspended for a total of four games, while Kamrica Turk, a junior guard at Alcorn State, has received a two-game suspension. Another Alcorn State player, senior guard Queriston Haynes, who had been ejected from the game for fighting, saw her suspension lifted after game film verified that she was not a participant.

Miller ranks sixth in the SWAC in scoring with an average of 14.1 points a game. She also ranks seventh in steals with 2.40 per game and sixth in free throw percentage, connecting on 73.0 percent of her shots.

Turk's lone appearance among the conference leaders is in assists, where she ranks 14th with an average of 2.12 per contest. She also averages 5.0 points per contest.

In addition to the player suspensions, Alabama State head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson and her assistant coaches have received public reprimands for failing to gain control of the situation on their home court at the Joe L. Reed Acadome.
