Prairie View's Lee, Alcorn's Fleming tabbed SWAC Hoops Players of the Week

January 16, 2001

BIRMINGHAM-- After leading Prairie View A&M University to a pair of huge wins during the past week, sophomore center Tanisha Lee has captured Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the week honors. Marcus Fleming, a senior forward at Alcorn State University, is this week's SWAC men's player of the week.

Lee averaged 14.0 points and 15.5 rebounds as the Lady Panthers registered upset wins over Grambling State University (67-62) on January 13 and Jackson State University (55-48) on January 15. She also averaged 2.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 blocked shots. Among Lee's statistics were 17 points, 11 rebounds and three steals again GSU followed by 11 points, 20 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals against JSU.

"Tanisha has been playing extremely well this year," said Bob Atkins, PVAMU's head coach. "It's been a while since we've had a player to rank in as many conference statistical categories as Tanisha. She's a big factor for us both offensively and defensively.

"Tanisha's been a big part of the success we've had thus far this year," added Atkins. "Hopefully as she improves, the team will continue to get better. If she continues to work hard and stay mentally focused, I know she can get even better. "

Fleming's POTW award marks the second time this season that he's won that honor. He was also tabbed player of the week on December 13. This time, averages of 27.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in victories over Mississippi Valley State University (100-95) on January 13 and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (81-65) on January 15 were good enough to land him the award. Fleming had 35 points and 16 boards against MVSU followed by 19 points and five boards versus UAPB.

"Marcus had a monster game against Mississippi Valley," said ASU head coach Davey Whitney. "I think he's always capable of putting those kinds of numbers up. Maybe this will give him confidence to keep doing it.

"I think he's definitely improved (from the start of the season)," added Whitney. "He made an extra effort to get out of whatever he was in."
