The Savannah State University Tiger Football Team will be in competition against two Division I -AA opponents in 1999 as SSU athletics director Dr. Jerome H. Fitch continues to "upgrade our level of competition". Bethune-Cookman will again host the Tigers in the Jacksonville, Florida Gateway Classic on September 4 and the Tigers will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee to face the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Moccasins in the River City Classic on September 18.
Savannah State opens the season at home, hosting the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on August 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Theodore A, Wright Stadium. They then travel to face Bethune in Alltel Stadium on September 4 at 7:OOp.m. and return to Ted Wright Stadium on September 11 to host the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University at 3.30 p.m. After the trip to Chattanooga to face the UT-C Moccasins at 3:30 p.m. on September IS, the Tigers return home on September 25 to host the Virginia State University Trojans at 5:30 p.m. in the sixth Annual Joseph Turner Classic in Ted Wright Stadium.
Savannah State's fourth classic of the season will be a return trip to Macon, Georgia to face the Golden Rams of Albany State University at 4:00 p.m. on October 2 in the second Annual Music City Classic. October 9 finds the Tigers back at Ted Wright at 5:30 p.m. to host the Wolverines of Morris Brown College.
October 16 is an open date for the SSU Tigers, but October 23 finds the team on the road again, this time to Frankfort, Kentucky to meet the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University at 1:45 p.m. in the KSU Homecoming game. The road from there leads to Fort Valley, Georgia and FVSU Homecoming 1999 on October 30 when the Tigers tangle with the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University at 1:30 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
Savannah State celebrates Homecoming this year at Theodore A. Wright Stadium. They host the Golden Bears of Miles College at 1:30 p.m. on November 6. The 1999 season ends in Tuskegee, Alabama with the clash of the SSU Tigers and the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University at 1:00 p.m. central time in Tuskegee's Alumni Stadium on November 13.
