FAMU Upsets Hampton in MEAC Men's Tennis

April 22, 2000

Hampton, VA - The Florida A&M Rattlers (#57/ITA) stopped the Hampton University Pirates four year MEAC Championship run with a 4-1 victory at the Neilson/Screen Tennis Stadium in Hampton, Virginia. The Rattlers also snapped the Pirates 25 year win streak in conference tournament play.

Prior to joining the MEAC in 1996, the Pirates had won 21 straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) titles and two national Division II championships. On the other hand, the Rattlers had won five straight MEAC titles (1990-1995) before the Pirates snapped that streak in 1996.

The Pirates won the doubles point winning the number one and number two doubles matches and had control at number one and two singles. The Rattlers Robert Beautelus (SR/Miami, FL) tied the score with his 6/2, 6/3 win over Shaun Crichlow (JR/Boston,MA) at the number five singles and took the lead for good with a win at number six singles.

The Rattlers won at number five singles and their excitement started with Jerry Joseph (SO/Rock Hill, SC) at match point in the final set at number three. Joseph defeated Paulo Barros (JR/San Jose dos Campos, Brazil) giving the Rattlers four straight wins in single play for the win. Play was suspended at number one and number two.

Robert Beautelus was named the Most Outstanding Player and FAMU's head coach Dr. Carl Goodman was named the Most Outstanding Coach.
