  • Alabama State has named assistant football coach Ben Harris as interim head coach until a permamant coach is hired. Harris takes the temporary position following the firing of head coach Ron Dickerson.
    Harris joined the ASU program in 1997 after a successful stint as a high school coach and athletic director. He has two degrees from Alabama State and will oversee recruiting activities for the school.

  • Alabama State has fired head football coach Ron Dickerson after two years on the job. The Hornets were 2-9 this season which ended with a loss to Tuskegee and a fight resulting in the arrest of an ASU assistant coach.

  • Coppin State has cancelled its women's basketball game at Troy State on December 28. The Lady Eagles scheduled one more than the maximum 28 games allowed under NCAA rules. "We had no choice but to cancel a game", said CSC AD Ron "Fang" Mitchell.

  • The Southwestern Athletic Conference has changed its method of counting league games beginning with the 2000 football season. This will resultin an alteration of the format for determining representatives to the annualchampionship game.

  • The new format will use a seven-game conference schedule that willinclude a team's four-game divisional schedule along with three games fromthe opposite division. The three inter-divisional games will rotate ona two-year basis for each school
