Jackson State University Names Athletics Director

April 10, 2000

Jackson State University officials introduced Roy Culberson as JSU's sixth athletics director at a Friday, 11:30 a.m. press conference in the Sports Hall of Fame Room in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Culberson, the athletics director at the University of Montevallo, will fill the position left vacant when Paul Covington retired as the Tiger's athletics director on June 30, 1999. He'll assume the post on July 1, 2000.

"It was an exhaustive search process and Mr. Culberson was among the top three candidates. I think he is the best man for the job," said JSU President, Dr. Ronald Mason Jr.

JSU baseball coach, Robert Braddy served as interim athletics director for the past nine months.

A native of El Paso, Culberson brings significant experience in athletics and administration to Jackson State. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at the University of Texas El Paso. Prior to his two year stint as athletics director at the University of Montevallo, Culberson served as associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from 1994 to 1998. He served as Coordinator of Student Support Services at the University of Texas el Paso from 1991 to 1994. Culberson was an assistant football coach at UTEP from 1989 to 1991.

"I am excited about the opportunity and challenges of leading the Jackson State athletics program," said Culberson. "There is enormous potential here and I will work toward helping the student athletes, staff and athletic personnel take the next step toward realizing that potential."

Under his direction at Montevallo, the NCAA Champs Life Skills Program was established. Culberson has developed publications such as "Guidebook to NCAA Regulations for Alumni and Supporters of the University of Montevallo" and " Fields of Purple and Gold, Funding Excellence in Athletics." He also created a Student Athletic Advisory Board and helped develop new athletic marketing ventures in fund raising for the department.

While working as an administrator in athletics, Culberson has served on two peer review teams for the NCAA, certifying the University of Oregon and Fresno State University athletic departments.

Culberson and his wife, Deborah, have four children and five grandchildren.
