SWAC Spring Sports Championships Jackson Bound

April 8, 2000

BIRMINGHAM -- After a four-year stay in the city of New Orleans, the Southwestern Athletic Conference's spring sports championships in baseball, softball and outdoor track and field will be contested in Jackson, Miss. SWAC commissioner Rudy Washington made the announcement on Friday, indicating that Jackson State University and the city of Jackson will team up to ensure the success of the championships.

"We're pleased the city of Jackson and Jackson State University are so enthused about hosting the championships," stated Washington. "It's evident that all of the parties involved are dedicated and focused on making all of the events bigger than ever before. We think our coaches, student-athletes and fans will be very much pleased with the effort put forth to make each event enjoyable and memorable."

The 2000 SWAC baseball tournament will feature six teams, including the top three finishers from both the league's Eastern and Western divisions. Play begins on Wednesday, May 3 and concludes on Saturday, May 6 at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson.

The 2000 SWAC softball tournament will also feature the top three teams from each division and it'll likewise be contested on May 3-6. The venue for the softball tourney will be the Veterans Administration Field in Jackson.

The 2000 SWAC outdoor track and field championships will be staged at Raymond High School in Raymond, Miss., on the outskirts of Jackson. The three-day event is scheduled for Thursday, May 4 through Saturday, May 6.

The admission fee for the baseball tournament as well as the outdoor track and field championships is $3 per ticket. There will be no charge to attend the softball tournament.

"I think it's great for Jackson," stated Robert Braddy, JSU's interim athletics director. "The atmosphere is right for it. I believe the people of Jackson and Jackson State will support this venture.

"It's a natural fit," added Braddy. "It's centrally located. We hope this will be the first of a long contract with Jackson to host all the spring sports championships in the future."

This year, two of the SWAC springs championships will have different dates and venues. Golf is slated for April 12-14 in Shreveport, La. while the tennis championships are scheduled for April 20-22 in Montgomery, Ala.
