CAU Cage Coach: We can win the conference again!

ATLANTA-Clark-AU’s baby brand new head basketball coach Dale Brown says he is convinced that his Panther cagers can repeat as conference and tournament champs of the SIAC.

“I’m very confident,” Brown told INSIDE following an impressive come from behind 80-74 win over Kentucky State January 14 ‘’They are jelling now. We have a couple of new players we didn’t have in the first semester and they’re learning how to play with one another. We’re gonna be ok.” Last season, the 4th seeded Panthers defeated second seed Stillman 78—71 to win their first SiAC tournament in 46 years.

Brown’s confidence in the 2011-2012 Panthers got a healthy booster shot during their game with visiting Kentucky State.

The first half of their game with the Throrobreds was all KSU. At times trailing their opponents by 20 points, the Panthers went into the locker room at the break with a 15 point deficit.Dale BrownBrown huddles with his team

“ We got upset because they weren’t attacking the pressure,” said Brown. “ They were falling back on their heels and playing scary. We told them they should be ready for this because we’ve been preparing for this for the last two days. The first part of the game, they weren’t listening and pretty much doing their own thing. At the half, we drilled them and they got the message.”

HamiltonHamilton“Coach told us to play smart, play our game, “ said senior Royce Hamilton, a transfer from Alabama A&M. Against the Thorobreds, he scored 19 points to lead all scorers.

The Panthers outscored KSU 46-23 in the second stanza,  were 14 of 20 from the free throw line and had five three pointers.

The win over KSU was their fourth in five games . The streak started January 2 when the Panthers shocked the league-leading Benedict Tigers 71-54 (the only other SIAC team to beat the Tigers as of January 14 was Albany State on January 12). CAU is now third in the conference standings behind Benedict and Paine College. “We believe we are the best team in the league,” said Hamilton. “We have lulls like any other team. We just got to get better every day.”

“All I want from these guys is the effort,” said Brown. If I get the effort every night, then I’m excited.” The Panthers hit the road January 19 for three games with Tuskegee, Stillman and Claflin before returning home January 26 to face Morehouse.

‘ROUND THE CONFERENCE: The Morehouse Maroon Tigers struggle to find their way back to the winners circle. January 14, the Tigers dropped a 61-55 decision to Lane College. It handed the visiting Dragons their first win of the 2011-2012 season……Daryl JacobsJacobs

XTRA POINTS: Took a peak at former CAU cage coach Daryl Jacobs who is now piloting the Virginia State Trojans. Looks like his inaugural year is a challenging one for him thus far. As of January 14, the Trojans were 3-16…for now. That’s the same start ole “Jake” had at CAU. But patience, recruiting and hard work turned it all around and he left the school with its first conference and tournament win since 1965. It happened there and it will happen at VSU……..

I was disappointed, though not really surprised, that this year’s Senior Bowl football game in Mobile Alabama was devoid of players from HBCU schools……
