Former CAU Coach now at Southeastern (La)

ATLANTA- Any of you wondering what happened to former Clark-Atlanta University head coach Kevin Weston can find him now in the bosom of the coaching staff at Hammond Louisiana’s Southeastern University. This, by the way, is the college that produced Robert Alford of Hammond now with the Atlanta Falcons and noted ABC anchor “Rockin” Robin Roberts. It’s still unclear why Weston was let go (or let himself go). Its open to certain speculation. A source told INSIDE that it was because the athletes complained about him……

The 100 Black men of Atlanta finally got around to publicly explaining the future of the 26 year old Atlanta Football Classic. The game, which helped finance the club’s Project Success for inner city middle and high school students here, is dead. Their “official” press release says they have gone in with the movers and shakers putting on the first Celebration Bowl of Atlanta which is being heavily bankrolled by ESPN. The rewards from this amalgamation will likely keep Project Success going without the headaches of putting on a big game, however successful. Of course, you readers of this column knew about this long before the word came down from the 100BM hierarchy…Go to the blogs section of this web page and visit the May 10 edition…….

TO THE SIAC: Clark-AU , Morehouse and their other contemporaries in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) kick off their 2015 grid campaigns this weekend. Morehouse, picked to finish fourth in the SIAC’s five school eastern division will open up at home against the Tigers of Edward Waters College from Jacksonville, Florida.

Last season, the Maroon Tigers defeated EWC 31-16. The two colleges have met five times since 2004. Morehouse has defeated the Florida Tigers four times. The last time the two teams met in Atlanta, the Marooners ecked by 28-26.

cau interim head coach kevin ramseyRamseyMeanwhile, Clark-AU journeys to Tuskegee, Alabama to face the defending conference champion Golden Tigers. CAU is now piloted by Kevin Ramsey, who was hired July 13. CAU’s last win over Willie Slater’s cats was in 2006 when they beat them at CAU 10-6. This is the first meeting between the two colleges since 2012 when the Panthers lost 14—0 hosting Tuskegee in Atlanta.

The rest of the conference now and my picks for this weekend (Note: Some of the schools opened on Thursday, September 3. Their scores are included:

  • Central State over Anderson-Broaddus
  • Albany State over Valdosta State
  • Delta State (48) over Fort Valley (7)
  • Tuskegee over CAU
  • Lane over Concordia-Selma
  • Benedict over Livingstone (televised over Aspire Network-4:30pm)
  • West Alabama over Stillman
  • Hampton over Kentucky State
  • Morehouse over Edward Waters
  • Miles over University of North Alabama (Sunday)

100 wrong club bannerXTRA POINTS: Looks like life is being breathed back into the historic 100% Wrong Club of Atlanta.. INSIDE has been in touch with a few members of the club who say meetings are already underway to bring the famed and hallowed organization back on the sports map. Economics forced the association to put a deep freeze on the Wrong Club’s activities in 2012.

Of their members, former pro footballer and now wildly successful businessperson and author Stevie Baggs (Bethune Cookman) had told me he was starting a movement himself to get the club back together. One of the things I really hope they include in their reorganization plans is the Jake Gaither Trophy. It was started in 1978 and awarded annually to the best HBCU footballer. It is , essentially, the black man’s Heisman (though open to athletes of all races). Although I am not a member, I intend to roll up my sleeves to assist in bringing the Wrongers back to their feet. I have been following their exploits since I was six years old………

Those of you planning to travel this year to HBCU football games and would like money saving tips and advice on making the trips more enjoyable should visit

This is shameless plug for the author, Anita M Lamar esq.(my daughter) who travels frequently, but mixes pleasure with business by close observation while keeping detailed notes of her travels. Her comments are frank and influenced at all through perks (I knew I’d make her a journalist one way or another!)
