Mo’House or ‘Skegee in Columbus Georgia Classic 80?
(ATLANTA)-Since signing on the dotted line to become Morehouse College’s new head football coach in 2007, the Atlanta homeboy, Rich Freeman, has racked up a record of 47 wins and 36 losses. Now in his ninth year at the helm, he has had only two losing seasons and taken the Marooners to their first ever NCAA Division II playoff bid in 2010. That same year the school started their season at 5-0; Morehouse’ best start ever. The team went 3-0 in 1977 and 1972.
But what might make the graduate of Alonzo A Crim High School and Tennessee State University the happiest, is another win over Tuskegee. His only victory against the Alabama Golden Boys was in 2011 when they bested them 17-14.
Freeman and the Maroon Tigers will get yet another opportunity this Saturday when they mix in Columbus, Georgia at the 80th playing of the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic (once called the Columbus Classic) The game will be televised by the black-owned Aspire cable channel and on radio by the HSRN network.
Kickoff is 2pm.
Last weekend, Morehouse faced Clark-Atlanta University in a rivalry dating back more than 70 years and defeated the rebuilding Panthers 23-13.Junior quarterback Monqavious Johnson threw for two touchdown strikes and ran for a third to lead the scoring . CAU intercepted a Johnson pass late in the fourth period but the Panthers couldn’t progress past their own 22 in seven plays before the game ended. Freeman, happy with the win which gave them their first conference and division victory of the season and second place in the SIAC’s eastern division, was not satisfied with his team’s overall performance. “We left a lot of points on that field,” he told INSIDE after the game. But Coach (Kevin) Ramsey is a defensive coaching genius. We expected to face a tough CAU defense. But we have to get better performance from our superlatives. There’s some great talent on this ball club. We’ll need every one of them Saturday.”
Ellsewhere in the SIAC, Stillman quarterback Brett Standifer threw for 279 yards and tossed three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 29-17 homecoming victory over Lane…….Kentucky Wesleyan handed Central State their second straight loss, 35-7. The two teams were tied 7-7 at halftime, but KW scored 28 unanswered points in the second…….Kentucky State knocked off Benedict 32-19. It was their second straight win. Benedict, still winless, tied the score 19-19 in the third but then were shut out by the ‘Breds 13-0 in the fourth period…….Fort Valley led opponent Adderson-Broaddus 20-7 at halftime but got shut out with 20 unanswered points in the second to lose 27-20 …Tuskegee’s celebrated quarterback Kevin Lacey passed for 153 yards and rushed for one TD but that wasn’t enough to overcome UNC-Pembroke who handed the Golden Tigers their first loss of the season, 29-17…….Miles led Albany State 14-0 at the half but the Rams took the lead in the closing moments of the third and never gave it back. ASU gets another conference win, 29-16. Although in a losing cause, Miles Jabril Cox returned a final missed PAT 98 yards with one second to go….
XTRA POINTS: I’ve begun taking closer looks at officials-the men and women in stripes across the board. I’ve seen well officiated, moderately officiated and “stink up the place” officiating. I must say of late, I’ve seen more of the latter than the former. The conferences are trying to improve by assigning veteran, retired officials to evaluate the games. I’ve known evaluators from the NFL, minor league football, arena and college and high schools who ask hard questions of the striped shirts after games. I’m gathering what info I can now on an SEC official named Hubert Owens. All I know now is that Owens is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University. I also found some action shots from the field. I’d like to know more. He appears to be one of the most respected referees in the SEC. If you know him. Email me at hallamar at comcast.net
