SURPRISE!! KENTUCKY STATE BEATS TOP OPPONENT, DEBUTS NEW HEAD COACH

ksu throrbred logoNotwithhstanding Kentucky State's opening season victory over Division I opponent Robert Morris on September 7, pulling off their first opening season win in five seasons, the Thorobreds also introduced their new head football coach who came to Frankfort, Kentucky from the Atlanta Falcons.

Truth is, the Falcons, who lost their season opening game to Minnoesota nearly a fortnight ago, probably needed Charlie Jackson on the sidelines as bad as the Thorobreds do.

Jackson, who also spent time as a captain in the United States Air Force, was a defensive backs coach for two years with the Falcons and spent time on the sidelines and the front offices of the NCAA, the St Louis Rams, the Seatle Seahawaks, the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers and near half a dozen major college programs.

"(Charlie) Jackson is a leader in the highest sense," said Falcon Head Coach Dan Quinn. "His awareness for the situation and what's needed at the crucial time will provide the team at Kentucky State a clear vision toward success in all areas."Coach Jackson cares about his players and getting the best out of them, adds Falcon all-pro strong safety Keanu Neal."He's about building relationships that go deeper than football. {He is a} Great coach, but ann even better man." (Coach Jackson)"is a total package of experience and expertise." says KSU Athletic Director Etienne Thomas. ksu charlie jacksonJackson

A native of Vienna, Georgia (Macon County) and 1999 graduate of the Air Force Academy with additional degrees from California State University, Jackson doubtlessly made a great impression on the Kentucky State staff and especially the faithful who followed the team to Robert Morris's campus just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and watched the 'Breds overcome a 7-6 deficit at halftime, score in the third period and then hold on to their 13-7 lead despite a serious threat from the host Colonials who fumbled the oval on the Kentucky State one yard line which was recovered by KSU junior Earnest Austin.

The victory is especially sweet for KSU and Jackson since it represented only the second victory for the SIAC and Division II college over a Division I opponent in 16 tries since joining the conference in 1996.

The 'Breds will get a second shot at D-1 competition September 28 when they travel to Indianapolis Indiana to take on Jackson State in the 36th Circle City Classic.

'ROUND THE CONFERENCE: It was the usual nailbiter between 'Skeegee and 'Bama State that came to a head with 8:33 remaining in the half. On their last series, the Goldens worked the oval from their 19 to the ASU 17. But one rushing pushback and then three incomplete passes failed to penetrate. ASU got the pigskin with 2:14 to go. Time ran out. 'Skegee returns to campus 38-31 losers. Whew!....

Quincy University, the Illinois school that could, did. They outpointed Central State 28-0 by haltime and, with CSO lacking offense, wound uo losing 38-8 on Marauder turf.....

Reggie Ruffin took his 'Bama elevens to Peach County, Georgia, grabbed a 17-10 and then shut out the Fort Valley Cats 21-0 and went back to Fairfield 38-17 winners.......

Albany State faced Valdosta State on ASU turf but the "12th man" didn't help. They lost it 38-3...The Rams last victory over the Blazers was 29-12 in 2017......

Clark-Atlanta's introduction of their new head coach TIm Bowens was disappointing. The Panthers trailed 17-14 at the break but couldn't get the offense cranked and lost to visiting Livingstone 24-13 ......

Morehouse went to Jacksonvile, FL hungry for a win after a heartbreaking loss to Alabama A&M a near fortnight ago. They beat their hosts, Edward Waters, 26-20. Did they needlessly struggle to win, though? With due respect to EWC, I think maybe yes.......

And Mike White and the Benedict Tigers came up shortchanged , losing on the road to the Broncos of Fayetteville State 35-21 and the Dragons of Lane fell to Buddy Pough's SCSU Dawgs 34-0. SCSU scored something in each of the four quarters and shut out everything Dragon..........

By the way. I have completely left out Savannah State from my reports. Remembering they are back in the bosom of the SIAC will take some getting use to. They've only played one game thus far and were impressive albeit in a losing effort. The final Florida Tech 23, Savannah State 22......
