Savannah State's return to SIAC best move in school's 129 year history(?)
To my humble way of thinking, one of the best moves Savannah State University ever made since it opened its doors in Athens, Georgia as Georgia State Industrital College for colored youth over a century and a quarter ago, was moving out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and back into the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) where it had a since joining the 100-plus year old conference in 1969.
The Tigers have proven the decision to return to the SIAC in 2017 and play its first season this year as a full-time member was a damn good one.
In the season and home opener against the Florida Tech Panthers September 8, the Tigers lost 23-22 after failing on a two-point conversion attempt with 13 seconds remaining in the game. The following Saturday against Virginia -Lynchburg and on a short week, the Tigers soundly defeated their visitors 60-21, setting a new record for total offensive yards with 554, the most for SSU since 2009 plus providing the first win in the career of their new head coach Shawn Quinn. With a 1-1 mark (as of September 14), SSU hadn't experienced that since 1999.....their last full year in the SIAC.
The burnt orange and blue Tigers' face an uphill climb in the next five weeks, however. They won't face a hometown crowd until October 26 when they host Albany State University as their homecoming opponent........
IN THE AU CENTER: Morehouse lost their second game of the three week old 2019 season on the road September 14 against Miles College 45-21. The game had the makings of a rout as the Golden Bears took a 38-0 lead through halftime and most of the third quarter. The Maroon Tigers athletic ego was spared a deep bruising thanks to the effort of their junior quarterback Jalen Brown who tossed three touchdown passes and accounted for 255 yards albeit in a losing cause.........
Clark-Atlanta University traveled three hours and 11 minutes to Columbia, South Carolina September 14 and a date with Allen University. The Panthers returned to campus 0-2, falling to the Yellow Jackets 16-10. A promising drive late in the fourh quarter by the Panthers resulted in a fumble at the Allen 24, recovered by the Jackets with less than a minute in the contest......
ELSEWHERE IN THE SIAC: Ironically, the 13-7 score that put Kentucky State on the winning end against Robert Morris in the season opening shocker September 7, the Thorobreds versus Tuskegee the following weekend resulted in a 13- 7 win for the Goldens. The deciding points came late in the fourth period on a 35 yard run by Taurean Taylor with 1:04 remaining......
Lane College picked up its first win for 2019 over Texas College 29-0....
Central State lost on the road against Southwest Baptist 32-3, Benedict lost to Johnson C Smith 34-31, Fort Valley fell to Florida A&M 57-30, and Albany State lost on the road to Mississippi College 24-17
XTRA POINTS: Ocilla, Georgia native, Allen Univesity graduate and 13 year Pittsburgh Steeler guard Sam Davis died September 10. Initial reports said Davis was missing from his nursing home residence in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Later, Mr. Davis's son told media his father had suffered a heart attack and was found in the home hours later. His homegoing was held September 18 in Pittsburgh .
Davis played in four Super Bowls with the Steelers in the 70s when he signed on as an undrafted rookie in 1967. He was applauded by teammates and friends and described as "tenacious" and a student of the game. Steeler teammate and Hall of Famer Franco Harris spoke of Davis as "good people" and "a great teammate."
In lieu of flowers and other sentiments, the family is requesting those who wish to be part of honoring the Davis legacy make a donation to the Sam & Tamara Davis Family Scholarship Fund.
You can make checks payable to “Sam & Tamara Davis Family Scholarship” and mail to the following: Sam & Tamara Davis Family P.O. Box 59151 Pittsburgh, PA 15210.
