Custom Search PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Don Metil, the winningest coach in University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball history, has resigned from his position to become the head women’s volleyball coach at Towson University.

“I would like to thank all of the players, parents, fans, athletic administration members and the community for their support over the past six years,” says Don Metil. “I have a tremendous appreciation for Mr. Davidson, entrusting me with the opportunity and responsibility to lead and be part of such a great program, one that set milestones and made school history. I wish nothing but success to the entire UMES athletics family. It will always be a special place for me.”
Metil ends his tenure with UMES after six years at the helm of the women’s volleyball program. During his time, the Hawks won their first-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships in 2011 and 2012 and reached the conference title match each year from 2007 through 2009.
“Don Metil brought the UMES volleyball program to its greatest success in school history,” says UMES Director of Athletics Keith Davidson. “We thank him for the contributions he brought to our program and this school, and he will be missed here at UMES.”
In addition, UMES won the MEAC Northern Division regular season title all six seasons, combining to go 61-3 in MEAC matches for a .953 winning percentage in conference play. The team never lost a home match against a MEAC opponent in Metil’s tenure.
The Hawks won at least 20 matches all six years and combined to earn a 145-45 record.
In 2012, the Hawks had their best season in school history, finishing 28-6 overall.
Winning the SFC Terrier Invitational, WVU Golden Horseshoe Challenge and the ASU Tournament, the Hawks went 11-1 in-conference to win the MEAC Northern Division.
UMES defeated Bethune-Cookman, Hampton and Florida A&M to win its second straight MEAC Championship. The Hawks earned an automatic qualifier into the NCAA
Tournament, falling to 4-seed Nebraska at the NU Coliseum in Lincoln. Among UMES’s victories in 2012 included West Virginia, North Texas, Troy and Jackson State.
Metil was a three-time MEAC Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2008, 2009 and 2011. In 2011 and 2012 he was named the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach.
As a team, UMES holds or has held several team records in Division I. The Hawks currently hold the longest-winning streak in D-I, having won their last 30 matches at the Hytche Athletic Center dating back to 2010. From 2007 to 2010, UMES won 37 consecutive MEAC matches to hold the longest conference-winning streak in D-I.
UMES also led all of D-I in aces per set in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
During his six years, UMES had the MEAC Player of the Year twice, the MEAC Rookie of the Year four times and 18 all-conference players, including 11 First Team All-MEAC players.
