SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah State University director of athletics Sterling Steward Jr. today announced that Steve Davenport has been relieved of his duties as head football coach, effective immediately.
Steward also released the remainder of the football coaching staff with one exception: cornerbacks coach Corey Barlow, who has been named interim head coach.
“We wish Coach Davenport and his staff success with all their future endeavors,” said Steward.
“I don’t really know (why) and I didn’t ask,” Davenport related to SavannahNow.com about his dismissal. “Me and the boss (Steward) have been clashing for a while. Some day I’ll have a story to tell, just not now.”
Davenport became SSU's 22nd head football coach in 2011 and compiled a 2-20 record over the span of two seasons. The Tigers finished with a 1-10 record in 2011 and a 1-10 record in 2012.
Davenport came to SSU from the University of Alabama-Birmingham where he served as the Blazers running back coach from 2006-2010.
Steward said the search for a new head football coach will begin immediately.
