Custom Search ATLANTA, GA - Morehouse College continued its track and field dominance on Saturday, April 20th as the Maroon Tigers won their eighth consecutive SIAC Championship. Benedict College won the first SIAC Women’s Track & Field Championship in school history, Saturday evening at the historic Edwin Moses track between the hedges of B.T. Harvey Stadium on the campus of Morehouse College.
Placing athletes in several track and field events, the Maroon Tigers scored 190 points during the meet holding off a strong second place performance by Albany State University, which totaled 171 points, while Stillman College finished third with 96 points.
The Maroon Tigers were led by their Most Valuable Field Performer Jeremy Blue, who scored 21 points and won the discus event, while placing in the hammer and shot put. Arvon Amisal also helped out Morehouse by finishing first in the high jump and triple jump. Distance runner Karlton Mitchell, provided an additional spark with a runner-up finish in the 800 and 1500 meter events.
Scoring 224.50 points, the Lady Tigers dominated the three day event by claiming gold medals in eight events, while placing second in five events to unseat defending SIAC Women’s Champion Albany State, who finished as the runner-up of the meet with 160.5 points. Clark Atlanta finished third place with 97.50 points.
Benedict was led by freshman Jonnise Pierce, who was named Most Valuable Track Performer and Cleve L. Abbott Award Winner (Highest Total Meet Points) after scoring 36 points. Pierce claimed top honors in the 1,500 meters, 10,000m events, while earning second place in the 800 meters, 5,000 meter events.
The Lady Tigers also received a major boost from its sprinter Chemeka Davis, Stephanie Rhoden, Tarae Sweeintg, and Krishanda Cambell-Brown, who all medaled for first and second in several events. Benedict head coach Frank Hyland was named the Most Outstanding Coach of the event.
Krishanda Campbell-Brown and Claflin’s Lashanique Mangle were named Co-Most Valuable Track Performers of the Meet after scoring 24 points apiece.
The Lady Tigers dominated the 2013 Track & Field Championships scoring 224.50 points, while Albany State University finished second with 160.50 points and Clark Atlanta University third with finished third with 97.50 points.
Morehouse head coach Willie Hill was named Most Outstanding Coach of the championship and Albert Murrey of Albany State was named the Most Valuable Track Performer for the event.
For third place Stillman, sprinter Jeremy Henderson led the charge by claiming his title as the SIAC’s fastest man by sweeping the 100 and 200 meter events.
