Custom Search NEW ORLEANS - The Grambling State Tigers claimed their fifth straight men's title and Alabama State University outran Prairie View A&M for their eighth women's crown on Sunday at the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium.
GSU scored 146 points to earn their 9th title overall, earning Bertram Lovell Coach of the Year honors. It was four straight for ASU as the Lady Hornets came from behind to capture the title scoring 196.5 points just ahead of Prairie View who finished with 183.33 points.
Prairie View A&M's men finished second the meet with 130 points, while Mississippi Valley State was third with 117 points. Southern was fourth with 113 points and Texas Southern rounded out the top five with 94 points. Alabama State was sixth (89 pts), Jackson State seventh (59 pts), Alabama A&M eighth (31 pts), Alcorn State ninth (21 pts) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 10th with 16 points.
Mississippi Valley State was a distant third in the women's standings with 101.33 points, while Southern and Texas Southern were fourth and fifth with 74 and 73.5 points respectively. Jackson State scored 52 points to finish sixth. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was seventh with 45, Alcorn State eighth with 32.33, Alabama A&M ninth with 32 and Grambling 10th with 28 points.
Individually, D'Wayne Houston of Southern was the championship Most Outstanding Men's Field Performer scoring 26 points. Houston won both the Hammer Throw and Shot Put, while finishing third in the Discus Throw (6).
Meanwhile Daniel Kibet of Mississippi Valley State was the meet Most Outstanding Men's Runner, sweeping all of the distance events, 1500m, 5000m and 10000 to pile up 30 points.
Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff earned Most Outstanding Women's Track Performer honors. She won the 800m, 1,500m and 5000m races, rolling up 30 points. In the 5000m, she set a new SWAC record with a blazing finishing time of 17:50.38. She eclipsed the old record of 18:02.24 by 12 seconds.
Tambriya Barney of Mississippi Valley State claimed the Most Outstanding Women's Field Performer accolades, finishing with 20 points. She took first place in the Long Jump (10) and Triple Jump (10).
