Custom Search NEW ORLEANS, La. - The No. 6 singles match became the deciding factor as No. 1 seed Southern University defeated No. 2 seed Alcorn State, 4-3, to claim the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.
SU captured its fourth straight women's title and 12th overall. It's the second time the Lady Jaguars captured four titles in a row. The last was from 2002-2005. SU has now won eight of the last 12 SWAC tournament crowns.
SU's Morgan Taylor defeated Chan Rutherford in the No. 6 singles match-up, 6-8, 6-4, 6-3, as the match came down to the completion of the final showdown in singles competition.
Taylor was named women's MVP of the tournament with head coach Jeff Conyers receiving SWAC Coach of the Year honors.
Prairie View A&M University won its 21st Southwestern Athletic Conference men's tennis crown with a 4-0 win over defending tournament champion, Alcorn State.
The 21 championship titles is the most by any team in the SWAC. In addition, the Panthers picked up their second title in four years.
Men's Tournament MVP, Ronald Chidzikwe, sealed the match defeating Garry Amor during the No. 4 singles match-up. Chidzikwe picked up the win in two sets with scores of 6-0 amd 6-2.
PVAMU head coach, John Cochran, was named the 2013 SWAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
