Just weeks after Stillman College shut down football and other sports programs, Concordia College in Selma announced it was shutting down its football program.Concordia Selma Hornets

A spokeswoman told the Selma Times-Journal that the price of travel, equipment and other expenses became too much of a financial stress on the school.

The football program at Concordia College Alabama cost over $500,000 dollars a year to operate and used up roughly one-third of the college’s athletics budget, according to the school’s chief financial officer Dexter Jackson.

Students who previously received football scholarships to attend Concordia will be able to maintain their scholarship as long as they keep the required grade point average.

"If there’s a player that is interested in transferring to another school, we definitely will assist that player in completing their transfer,” Jackson said. “We are not trying to force or hold anyone to any scholarship and aid that signed with Concordia.”
