Alcorn State has quickly removed the interim tag and named Fred McNair as the school's next full-time head football coach.  He was introduced Tuesday at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson.alcn fred mcnairMcNair

McNair, who had served as the Braves' assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons, was named interim coach following the departure of Jay Hobson to Southern Mississippi.

"Fred McNair answers all of the qualifications that we look for," said Athletics Director Derek Horne. "He's an Alcornite, players coach who displays humility and a family man. One thing that stands out is the respect that he receives from his peers."

An emotional McNair humbly accepted his new role with the football team.

"It's been a long journey, but I'm finally here," said McNair. "I'm humbled for the decision you all made to make me the next head coach. This is my alma mater. I played here, coached here and now its time for me to be a leader of this program."

McNair, 47, is the older brother of the late Steve McNair, who played quarterback in the NFL for 13 seasons. Both brothers played quarterback at Alcorn State.

"Just being able to come back and be the leader of this football program means a lot to me," McNair said.
