Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University football team defeated Johnson C. Smith University 37-21 on Saturday, October 15th at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. FSU improves to 2-5 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Division, while the Golden Bulls drop to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the division.

fsu broncoThe Golden Bulls struck first with a 39 yard touchdown completion from Harold Herbin to Braxton Gambrell. JCSU grabbed a 7-0 lead with 4:24 remaining in the first quarter. Fayetteville State responded on the following drive with a 35 yard field goal after running seven plays. The first quarter concluded with the Broncos trailing 7-3.

FSU gained their first advantage in the second quarter. Junior quarterback Devin Knudsen (Fresno, CA) capped a nine play, 53 yard drive with an 11 yard touchdown toss to freshman wide receiver Jayden Maynor (Greensboro, NC) with 2:24 left to play in the first half. JCSU manufactured a 10-play scoring drive to recapture the lead before halftime.

Herbin connected with Demarcus Berry for a six yard TD pass in the right corner of the end zone. The score gave Johnson C. Smith a 14-10 lead at the break. The Broncos broke the game open with 17 unanswered points in the third quarter. Sophomore place kicker David Lamb (Pineville, NC) booted a 26 yard field goal to cut the FSU deficit to one (14-13).

Following the FG, junior defensive back David Stevenson (Stone Mountain, GA) had a 36 yard interception return for a touchdown. The return by Stevenson moved FSU in front 20-14 with 10:47 remaining in the third. Later in the quarter, redshirt freshman running back Stevie Green (Washington, NC) sprung loose up the middle for a 76 yard TD run.

JCSU faced a 27-14 deficit entering the fourth quarter. FSU allowed one final score to the Golden Bulls with 12:41 on the clock in the fourth. Knudsen drove the Broncos 75 yards down the field and found redshirt sophomore Brandon Harvey (Fayetteville, NC) on a 14 yard touchdown pass. Lamb made a 29 yard field goal down the stretch to account for the 37-21 final score.

Green rushed for a FSU freshman record 234 yards on 30 carries with one TD. Knudsen completed 7-of-14 passes (50%) for 107 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Both Harvey and Maynor had three catches for over 50 yards and a TD apiece.

Senior defensive back Eric Henderson II (Charlotte, NC) had a team-high nine tackles and a forced fumble. Stevenson and senior defensive back Brian Walker (Charlotte, NC) had one interception each. Redshirt freshman defensive end Darius Darden (Greensboro, NC) recorded three tackles, one sack, and a fumble recovery.

The Broncos had 394 yards of total offense and scored their most points of the season.

Fayetteville State returns to action on Saturday, October 22nd against Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the George Williams Athletic Complex.
