With the CIAA regular season heading into its last week, two teams have an opportunity to give themselves a chance to breathe.

basketball_bouncesOn Sat. Feb. 19, the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. University can wrap up the Southern Division at home with a win over Winston-Salem State University. On the men’s side, the Bowie State University Bulldogs can do the same to the Northern Division with a win at Virginia State University.

The Bulldogs (20-4 overall, 14-2 conference, 9-1 North) seem to have the easier road, facing a Trojans squad they beat by 28 points in Bowie while the Lady Golden Bulls (20-2, 13-2, 6-1) host the Lady Rams who they beat on Jan. 31 by a 64-60 margin.

Should the Bulldogs fall to the Trojans and Virginia Union beats Lincoln Feb. 19, the two will meet in Bowie Mon. Feb. 21 with the Northern Division title on the line. If the Lady Golden Bulls lose, they would still have the inside track and would take the title with wins over St. Augustine’s College and Livingstone College.

Regionally Speaking

Despite a loss to Elizabeth City State University, the Bulldogs’ men retained their spot at No. 2 in the latest Atlantic Region poll. Winston-Salem State University and Shaw University, who are currently tied for first in the CIAA Southern Division, come into the poll at No. 5 and No. 10, respectively.

On the women’s side, the Lady Golden Bulls’ loss to St. Augustine’s College placed them in the Atlantic Region at No. 7 while Livingstone College came in at No. 10.

Depending on what happens in the final week and then in the CIAA Tournament, it seems a shame that possibly only two teams could advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament on the men’s side and just Johnson C. Smith on the women’s side.
