ERIE, Pa. – Shaw University women’s tennis fell to Mercyhurst, 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament Monday afternoon at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. This contest marked the seventh time Shaw has made an appearance in the tournament in program history.ncaa wom tennis 150

The Lady Bears, which concludes their season with a 21-3 record, made its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years. Shaw earned an automatic berth into the postseason event after winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) two weeks ago.

Mercyhurst, which is ranked second in the region improved to 18-2 with the win. The Lakers will now take on the University of Charleston (W. Va.) in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday.

Shaw trailed 3-0 heading into singles competition after the Lakers won all three doubles at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions.

In No. 2 singles, Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) fell 6-0, 6-1 while at the No. 3 Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) suffered a 6-1, 6-4 decision and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) dropped 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 6 singles as the MU was able to secure the win.
