DANIELS, W.Va. -- Roberts Wesleyan shot a blistering 289 (+1) on the final day of competition to secure the 2018 Atlantic/East Region Championship on Wednesday afternoon at The Resort at Glade Springs.
Ten teams were within 11 shots of the winning score vying for a spot for the NCAA Division II Championships at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala., May 21-25. The Redhawks finished atop a bunched leaderboard with a three-day total of 889, just one shot ahead of Franklin Pierce (890) and three shots better than Charleston (892) to secure a spot at the NCAA Championships. Mercyhurst, Indiana (Pa.) and Concordia just missed a playoff with UC finishing in a tie for fourth at 893.
Roberts Wesleyan had all five players shoot 74 or better, with Grant Brongo and Alec Kunzwiler each shooting and even par 72 and Erich Spitz shot a 71 (-1).
Minwoo Park of Concordia ran away with medalist honors carding a 68 on the final day to finish with a three-day total of 207 (-9). Park, along with Wilmington's Ryan Rucinski (-3), are headed to the national championships as individuals.
Regionally ranked Virginia Union and CIAA Champion Livingstone College competed in the team competition. The VUU Panthers finished 16th overall with a three day total of 917. Livingstone came in 19th in the 20-team field with a total stroke count of 945.
The top HBCU individual golfer was Virginia Union's Allan Day. Day finished in a tie for 24th with an eight over par 224.
Fayetteville State's Isaiah Shaw finished tied for 58th with a score of 232. St. Augustine's Sam Cudjoe placed 104th with a three-day score 251.
