Alabama A&M 38, Alabama State 14
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- In the first ever spring Magic City Classic, Alabama A&M defeated Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent and in-state rival Alabama State 38-14 at Legion Field Saturday night to clinch the Eastern Division and a trip to the SWAC Championship game.
Alabama State got on the board early as running back Jacory Merritt punched in a one-yard touchdown to cap an 11 play, 95-yard drive with just over eight minutes to play in the first quarter, before a response by the Bulldogs to tie the ball game.
After a defensive stop early in the second quarter, the Hornets scored again after another long drive, this time 85 yards, capped by a nine-yard pass from Chris Scott to Michael Jefferson.
Alabama A&M matched the score on their next possession, and blocked a punt late in the half leading to a field goal to take a 17-14 lead going into the locker room.
The second half was all Bulldogs, as they reeled off 21 unanswered points in the half to close out the game, while the Hornets struggled to get back in the end zone.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 36, Prairie View A&M 31
PINE BLUFF, Ark.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football team won the Spring 2021 SWAC Western Division Championship with a 36-31 win over Prairie View A&M Saturday at Simmons Bank Field.
The Golden Lions continued to turn back the clock in winning the division championship for the first time since 2012.
Quarterback Skyler Perry (16-33, 201 yards, 4 TDs 1 INT; 12 car, 45 yards, 1 TD) accounted for a career-high five touchdowns, wide receiver Josh Wilkes (3-16-2) caught a pair of touchdown passes, and wide receiver Tyrin Ralph tied a career-high seven receptions for a career-high 100 yards and one touchdown as UAPB defeated Prairie View A&M (2-1, 2-1) for the first time since 2012.
Linebacker Isaac Peppers III had four tackles and a career-high 3.5 sacks. His sack on the final play of the game sealed the win for the Golden Lions. Defensive back Jalon Thigpen also had a career-high two interceptions in the contest.
Trailing 14-7 after the first period, UAPB scored three touchdowns in the second quarter. Perry's one-yard TD run tied the score at 14-14 less than two minutes into the second quarter.
The Golden Lions will play in the Cricket Wireless SWAC Football Championship Game presented by Pepsi Zero on Saturday May 1 against Alabama A&M at 2:00 p.m. CT at a location TBD.
