Saint Augustine's University 2019 CIAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Champions

 BOWIE, MD – Saint Augustine’s ran away with the men’s title and Winston-Salem State held off three teams for the women’s crown on the final day of the 2019 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bowie State on Sunday.

Saint Augustine’s relied on its traditional depth to cruise past Virginia State 194-101 for its 22nd straight men’s outdoor championship. The title was the 39th in 41 years for the Falcons, led by the legendary George Williams, who was the head coach of each SAU championship team. On Sunday, Williams was selected CIAA Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year for the umpteenth time after his Falcons cruised to victory.

The Falcons crossed the finish line first in seven of 12 events. Alazae Hester-Taylor won both the 110 and 400 hurdles and Shaquille Dill was the winner in the 800 run. Najair Jackson won the javelin throw and Darren Alfred was first in the 400 dash. The Falcons swept the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Meanwhile, Winston-Salem State claimed its second women’s championship in three years, but first under new Head Coach Kaymarie Jones. The Rams scored 113 points to nudge Fayetteville State (107), Virginia State (106) and Saint Augustine’s (95). Cierra Thompson won the 100 dash for the Rams, who also took home the 4x400 relay. Jenele Terry of WSSU won the long jump on Saturday.

Individually, Virginia State swept the women’s most valuable performer awards. Kyla Frank was the track MVP and Jeia Gilliam earned field MVP honors. Frank won the 1500 and 3000 runs and placed second in the 800 run in addition to running on the fifth-place 4x400 relay team. Gilliam won the shot put and discus throw and finished second in the javelin throw.

For the men, Davion McKnight of Claflin claimed track MVP honors in the Panthers’ first outdoor conference meet and Solomon Potter of Lincoln (Pa.) was the field MVP. McKnight won the 200 dash, finished second in the 100 dash and was a member on the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams that finished second and fourth, respectively. Potter was the discus winner and placed third in the shot put and javelin throw.

Other women’s winners on Sunday were Alisha St. Louis of Johnson C. Smith (Triple Jump), Jade Jordan of Virginia State (High Jump), Danielle Scantlebury of Saint Augustine’s (100 Hurdles), Amanda Crawford of Saint Augustine’s (400 Dash), Kaydi Ann Wint of Shaw (800 Run), Shannon Kalawan of Saint Augustine’s (400 Hurdles) and Jerinique Brooks of Fayetteville State (200 Dash). Fayetteville State won the 4x100 relay.

Other men’s winners on Sunday were Jordan Peebles of Virginia Union (Triple Jump), Davon Carroll of Bowie State (100 Dash), and Micah Kipruto of Virginia Union (5000 Run).
