SALISBURY, N.C. – Livingstone College will be self-reporting a violation to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regarding a student-athlete’s eligibility for women’s basketball. Upon discovery, the institution started an internal investigation for which the student-athlete was improperly certified for the 2014-15 season.livingstone shield

The President of Livingstone College, Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr., is working with the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) to self-report the findings. The College is in the process of reviewing its controls and procedures to make sure that appropriate systems are in place to prevent such reoccurrence.

Although the College does not believe there was an attempt to gain or derive a competitive advantage by the participation of this student-athlete, President Jenkins has requested to the CIAA that all of the games in which the student-athlete participated be nullified.  Additionally, the President has assigned an internal auditor to review and sign off on all compliance documents prior to submission to the NCAA. The College will hold quarterly compliance workshops for the staff.  The President has agreed to participate in the NCAA Blueprint Compliance Review.

Dr. Jenkins issued this statement:  “We rely on our Athletics Department to be vigilant in making sure our athletics programs comply with NCAA standards, and it is now clear to me that the Department did not live up to our expectations.  The protection of the welfare and integrity of our great Institution is at the center of our mission.  I have therefore, along with the actions already taken, accepted the resignation of the Associate Director of Athletics-Compliance, and I have issued a Letter of Reprimand to the Athletic Director and placed him on probation for one year.”

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams issued this statement: “The CIAA commends President Jenkins for his involvement and due diligence in handling this matter.  He has been focused since the start of this review to protect the Institution, the CIAA and most importantly the welfare of the student-athletes.  The actions taken by Dr. Jenkins demonstrate his commitment to integrity, fair play and holding his institution to the highest standards.”
