The Daily Advance is reporting that Elizabeth City State University has hired Anthony Jones as its next head football coach.
Jones, who was a tight end on the 1987 Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins quarterbacked by Doug Williams, returns to a head coaching position after heading programs at Morehouse (1999-2001) and Alabama A&M (2002-2013). He has also served as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2014-2016).
In addition to his duties as ECSU’s new head football coach, Jones will also serve as an academic adviser within the Academic Affairs department.
Jones succeeds Earnest Wilson, who was fired on March 14 and becomes the second Viking head coach with Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) experience. Wilson coached at Savannah State before taking the job at ECSU.
Jones spent 11 years as head coach at Alabama A&M. He was named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2006 after the Bulldogs captured their first-ever conference title. The Baltimore native led A&M to four SWAC title games in nine seasons and finished with a career record of 101-70.
