RALEIGH, N.C. - Dr. Kristene Kelly has been appointed faculty athletics representative at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU). Her appointment was made by athletic director George Williams and approved by president Everett B. Ward. She succeeds Richard Moore, who held the position for many years before retiring in September 2015.
Dr. Kelly is the Chair of the Department of Business, Management, and Technology and an assistant professor of sport management at SAU. She has a doctor of education degree from the U.S. Sports Academy, a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee and two bachelor’s degrees from Johnson C. Smith University. She has served as an adjunct instructor at the University since 2009 and became a full-time faculty member in 2015.
"Athletics plays such an important role at SAU and in the community, and I believe working with student-athletes is a very rewarding job, so I am humbled and honored to be the faculty athletics representative,” said Kelly, who is a native of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. “As a former student-athlete and current faculty member who values the importance of athletics, I look forward to being another source of strength and support for our coaches and our superb scholar-athletes."
In her new post, Dr. Kelly will be responsible for ensuring the academic integrity of students participating in the University’s athletic programs, and helping oversee institutional control of the Department of Athletics. The faculty athletics representative serves as a liaison between the University and the athletic department in addition to representing SAU at the NCAA and CIAA meetings. In addition, the faculty athletics representative chairs the University Athletic Committee which functions as the faculty voice in intercollegiate athletics on issues of academic policy related to student-athletes.
