NORFOLK, Va. — The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has hired Taiqua Stewart as the Coordinator of Women’s Basketball Officials.
Stewart began officiating in the MEAC during the 1994-95 season and has worked 15 MEAC Basketball Tournaments. Also, she has officiated in the Atlantic Coast Conference (2005-2014), Colonial Athletic Association (2000-2014), the Atlantic 10 (1998-2000), Southern (2004-2012), Big South (2004-2012) along with the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1997-2014) Great Lakes Valley Conference (2006-07) and the NCAA Division III USA South Athletic Conference (2006-2000) and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (2004-08).
“We are pleased to have someone of Taiqua’s expertise and background to lead the MEAC women’s basketball officiating program,” MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas said. “Her experience as an official will help guide an already solid officiating program. Also, she has proven throughout her career to be among the best at every level in which she has worked, and I am thrilled that she will continue the great work in our conference.”
During the postseason, Stewart called games in the NCAA Division I, II and III Championships and the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. She was selected to officiate the 2006 NCAA Division II Elite Eight, Final Four and National Championship games.
Stewart, a 1986 graduate of Virginia Tech University, was a four-year letter winner on the basketball team. Also, she served on the bench as an assistant coach from 1994-1998 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
In the past two seasons, Stewart has served as a regional evaluator for the NCAA and currently works for Newport News Shipbuilding.
