"We are very excited about having Candace come on board," Howard Sports Information Director Edward Hill, Jr. said. "This department has had a rich history of young professionals in this position who have gone on to make their marks; Kevin Paige (Morgan State), Chevonne Mansfield (American Athletic Conference), Romanda Noble (Claflin University) and Lamar Carter (University of California at Berkeley) all sharpened their skills here before moving on to their present positions. Candace brings that same kind of talent to the position."

Two former Howard media relations staffers (Mansfield and Carter) have been named "Rising Stars" by the College Sports Information Directors of America, a trade organization of athletics media relations professionals.

Before coming to Howard, Johnson was an Athletic Communications Assistant at the University of Connecticut and worked primarily with the field hockey, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s rowing, softball and volleyball teams.

At UConn, she also served as the secondary for the women’s basketball team, who won the 2016 National Championship, making history with its fourth-straight national title. She was responsible for writing press release, previews and creating graphics for the historic program.

Prior to her time at UConn, she worked as a Sports Information Intern at Coppin State University, where she was responsible for women’s bowling, women’s basketball, volleyball and cross country under the guidance of Rob Knox.

“I believe Candace is a special and talented rising star in this profession,” Knox said. “Her knowledge of the MEAC and experience of working with UConn’s national championship women’s basketball program make her an excellent fit at Howard. I am proud of her growth and excited that she has the opportunity at Howard. She’s passionate, demonstrates a willingness to learn and is a strong writer with a great eye for storytelling. She will go beyond the box score to positively promote Howard athletics. I am confident that the Howard student-athletes and coaches will enjoy having Candace share their stories to its passionate fan base, alumni and campus community. She did a great job for me at Coppin State and Howard is lucky to have her on its staff.”

Johnson graduated from Guilford College in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. During her undergraduate career, she served as a Sports Information Assistant and Team Manager for the football program at Guilford. She was also a two-year Game Day Operations Intern for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
