Chavous named Jason Mai as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and Alvin Parker as assistant head coach/run game coordinator/tight ends coach. Arun Gomez is the defensive coordinator/strength and conditioning coach and William Frizzelle is the special teams coordinator/defensive backs coach. Kevin Jones will coach the linebackers and handle defensive quality control.

“I look forward to working with an excellent group of coaches,” Chavous said. “Coaches Mai and Parker are quality assistants who have the potential to be head football coaches. The Falcons were one of the best special team units in the nation under Coach Frizzelle. Coaches Gomez and Jones have bright futures in the profession.”

Below is a brief bio of each coach on the football staff.

Jason Mai enters his first season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Falcons. Mai previously coached five seasons at Winston-Salem State University where he served in multiple offensive roles, most recently as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. During Mai’s tenure at WSSU, the Rams amassed multiple national, conference and school records and won two HBCU national championships, three CIAA championships and two NCAA regional titles in addition to reaching the 2012 NCAA D-II national title game.

Alvin Parker begins his first season as assistant head coach, run game coordinator and tight ends coach for the Falcons. Parker has 18 years of coaching experience including 14 as a highly successful offensive coordinator. During his years as offensive coordinator, Parker helped guide teams to five CIAA title games, two NCAA playoff appearances and two Pioneer Bowls. As leader of one of the nation’s premier offensive attacks at Elizabeth City State University, Parker was recognized as a 2015 National Assistant Coach of the Year Finalist by the American Football Coaches Association. Under his guidance, ECSU averaged more than 30 points per game in CIAA games the last five seasons including 2013 when the Vikings were one of two teams to average over 30 points and over 400 yards per game.

Arun Gomez enters his second season as an assistant coach and first as defensive coordinator for the Falcons. He also is the strength and conditioning coordinator. In 2015, Gomez was the defensive line coach, video coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator on the team. He is a former football student-athlete at Saint Augustine’s University who graduated from his alma mater in 2013 with a human performance and wellness degree.

William Frizzelle is the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Falcons. This is his second stint with the Falcons. He was the special teams coordinator for 11 seasons in addition to coaching tight ends and defensive backs. Frizzelle last coached for the Falcons in 2013, when they tied for sixth nationally in Division II and led the CIAA in blocked kicks with eight. Under Frizzelle’s guidance, Tyron Laughinghouse ranked first nationally in yards per kick return (40.14) in the NCAA Division II rankings in 2012. Laughinghouse was named CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year and earned All-America honors that season.

Former great Kevin Jones returns to the Falcons for his second stint on the football coaching staff. Jones is the linebackers coach and defensive quality control coach. During his first stint from 2011 to 2013, Jones was the safeties coach. Jones was a tackling machine at outside and inside linebacker for the Falcons from 2003 to 2006. He was the 2006 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and still holds the school modern-day record for total tackles (21) in one game. Jones graduated from Saint Augustine’s University in 2007 with a business administration degree.

Chavous also has five volunteer coaches and two graduate assistants on the football staff. The volunteer coaches are Johnathan Glenn (offensive line), Levi Thompson (assistant quarterbacks coach/video coordinator), Frank James (wide receivers), Reggie Davis (running backs) and Donell Andrews (offensive line/offensive quality control). The student assistants are Dante DeVouse (Defense) and Denzel Watkins (Special Teams). All but Davis played football for the Falcons.
