HAMPTON, Va. -- Angie Nicholson, a successful NCAA Division I softball coach in the Great Lakes region, was announced today (Sept 19) as the new head softball coach at Hampton University.
"We extend a welcome to coach Angie Nicholson as she takes the reigns of the softball program at Hampton University," said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. "In a very good softball area, I look forward to seeing what coach Nicholson can do with our Lady Pirate program."
Nicholson comes to Virginia after three seasons as the head coach at Eastern Illinois University where she led the Panthers to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament every year. EIU finished in third place overall and second in the West Division during the 2014 season, and earned a No. 6 seed berth during the 2015 campaign. In 2016, Nicholson her Panthers earned the No. 2 overall seed in the OVC Tournament. A total of thirteen different Panthers have earned post-season accolades under Nicholson's tenure, including five First Team and six Second Team All-OVC awards. Her teams were 84-71 at Eastern Illinois.
Before Eastern Illinois, Nicholson was the head coach at Cleveland State for seven seasons where she has helped turn the Vikings program into a top team in the Horizon League. Nicholson's teams went 211-152 at CSU.
She headed the Vikings to Horizon League regular season titles in 2008 and 2010 and a Horizon League Tournament Championship in 2009. The 2009 title was Cleveland State's first as a member of the Horizon League as the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997. Nicholson guided the Vikings to tournament runner-up spots in 2007 and 2008.
During her time at Cleveland State, Nicholson coached three Horizon League Players of the Year and three Pitchers of the Year. In 2013 she coached the Horizon League Player and Newcomer of the Year. Nicholson was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year two times (2008 & 2010).
