Chesapeake, Virginia (March 26, 2017) - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Bowling Championship extended in to the 8th Round of bracket play as Bowie State University overcame their position in the lower bracket to upset Fayetteville State University for the 2017 CIAA Bowling Championship Title.
The final day of CIAA bowling competition began with Round 2 of the double-elimination, championship bracket. No. 1 Fayetteville State defeated No. 4 Virginia Union 4-1 to continue their journey in the winner bracket. The No. 3 Bulldogs of Bowie State slid by the No. 2 Virginia State University Trojans, but were knocked in to the bottom bracket after meeting the Lady Broncos. Fayetteville State won 4-1 in, what turned out to be, the two teams’ first battle of the day.
In the lower bracket, Saint Augustine's and Johnson C. Smith advanced with victories over Chowan and Shaw, respectively. The Hawks and Lady Bears were eliminated from the championship after the second round of competition. No. 8 Saint Augustine’s ended their run after facing Virginia Union, who won 4-0. Finishing Round 3, Virginia State went on a 4-0 sweep to send Johnson C. Smith packing.
The lanes became heated when Bowie State and Virginia State met yet again, this time in the lower bracket. This time the Bulldogs knew not to take the Trojans lightly, but the match still continued to 6 games. After BSU won 166-134 in the first game, VSU retaliated with a big 215-133 victory in the second. The Bulldogs proceeded to win games 3, 4, & 6 to advance to the CIAA Bowling Championship finals, meeting the Lady Broncos once again.
The Fayetteville State Broncos had sat for two rounds and their fatigue showed. The Bulldogs won the first three games before splitting the fourth with a tie. The Broncos gained their bearings and marked their first victory of the set, 159-135. However, BSU finished the job with a secure 170-157 victory.
To fulfill the double-elimination bracket, the Broncos and Bulldogs went in to an 8th round. The teams traded victories in the first three games, giving Bowie State a 2-1 advantage. In the 4th, the Bulldogs marked a huge 208-134 victory as their momentum climaxed. The defending CIAA Champion only needed one more victory to seal the deal, but was barely held off 157-156 by Fayetteville State. The 6th and final round was dominated by Bowie State, 168-107, for the 2017 CIAA Women’s Bowling Championship title.
The Championship Title is the Bulldogs’ 3rd consecutive and 7th in school history.
