RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University Department of Athletics has announced the addition of men’s and women’s soccer to its varsity sport teams. Shaw will compete as NCAA Division II in the Fall of 2017.
With the addition of men’s and women’s soccer, Shaw will now offer a total of 13 sport teams that include men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, football, women’s bowling, women’s volleyball, women’s outdoor track and field, and softball.
“We are very excited about the addition of men’s and women’s varsity soccer to our athletic programs starting Fall 2017,” said Director of Athletics, Dr. Alfonza Carter.
Luis Cortell will lead both programs, Cortell spent this past year leading a men’s and women’s club soccer team at Shaw.
“I would like to first thank Dr. Carter and President Dubroy on the confidence deposited on me to create the first ever men’s and women’s soccer program at Shaw University. Our staff job for the past seven months has been to recruit students, athletes, and community ambassadors all packaged into one and we believe we have found a lot of student-athletes that will allow our program to have a successful first season,” added Coach Cortell.
Prior to Shaw, Cortell spent one year at the Charlotte United Futbol Club in Charlotte, NC. Before moving to Charlotte, Cortell was head coach of the West Virginia Tech University soccer team for five years where he holds the all-time record for winning percentage at .777 (70-18-6), career wins, wins in a season, and all his teams were ranked in every single-season category.
