Charlotte, NC  – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has released its 2018 Women's and Men's Championship Brackets. The single-elimination tournament will be held in two venues again this year: Bojangles' Coliseum February 27-28 and Spectrum Center March 1-3. The Virginia Union University Panthers captured the women's Northern Division title with a win over Chowan University this afternoon. The Panthers finished the regular season with a 9-1 division record followed by the No. 2 Trojans of Virginia State University, who finished the regular season with a 6-4 division record following today's victory over Lincoln (PA) University.

The Hawks' loss put the team in a three-way tie with Lincoln (PA) and Bowie State University (each with a 5-5 division record). As a reminder, the conference's tiebreaker record is as follows:

  • head-to-head competition,
  • head-to-head point differential,
  • conference record,
  • a coin toss.

In head-to-head competition, Lincoln (PA) defeated Bowie State twice, putting the Lions ahead of the Bulldogs. Bowie State defeated Chowan twice in the regular season, positioning the Bulldogs ahead of the Hawks in ranking. Thus, the Lincoln (PA) Lions take the No. 3 N seed followed by Bowie State at No. 4. and Chowan at No. 5. The Northern Division No. 6 seed goes to Elizabeth City State University.

In the women's Southern Division, Fayetteville State University clinched the title with a perfect 10-0 regular season division record. Johnson C. Smith University and Winston-Salem State University both finished division play at 7-3. The Golden Bulls and Rams exchanged victories in the regular season, but the tiebreaker goes to Johnson C. Smith due to point differential (+16 vs. +8).

The remainder of the Southern Division has Saint Augustine's University at No, 4, Shaw University at No, 5, and Livingstone College at No. 6.

Tuesday's Women's Tournament contests are as follows: 10:00 a.m. Bowie State vs. Shaw, 12:10 p.m. Lincoln (PA) vs. Livingstone, 2:20 p.m. Saint Augustine's vs. Chowan, and 4:30 p.m. Winston-Salem State vs. Elizabeth City State. In the quarterfinals, Virginia Union will await the winner of Saint Augustine's and Chowan for a 2:20 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday while Fayetteville State will await the winner between Bowie State and Shaw for their 4:30 p.m. contest. On Thursday, the winner between Winston-Salem State and Elizabeth City State will advance to face Virginia State at 1:00 p.m. and Johnson C. Smith will play the winner between Lincoln (PA) and Livingstone at 3:00 p.m.

The men's Northern Division was clinched by the Trojans of Virginia State University, who finished with a 9-1 record in the regular season. The Trojans are followed by No. 2 Bowie State, No. 3 Virginia Union, and No. 4 Lincoln (PA). The remaining two seeds were determined via tiebreaker as Elizabeth City State and Chowan both finished 3-7. The teams split victories, but the Hawks secured the No. 5 seed with a slight 4-point differential, over the Vikings' 3-point margin. As a result, Elizabeth City State will enter the bracket at No. 6.

The Southern Division title came down to a battle between Johnson C. Smith and Shaw, who met at Brayboy Gymnasium for their final regular season contest tonight. Shaw's victory marked a tie between the Bears and Golden Bulls at 8-2 in the division. The teams split in head-to-head competition, but JCSU's 93-83 (+10) victory margin surpassed Shaw's 78-75 margin tonight. Yet another tie formulated as Saint Augustine's and Livingstone both advanced to 5-5 division records. The Blue Bears secured the No. 3 seed thanks to a 7-point margin versus the Falcons' 6-point differential. Following the No. 4 Falcons are Fayetteville State (No. 5) and Winston-Salem State (No. 6).

Tuesday's Men's Tournament contests are as follows: 6:40 p.m. Lincoln (PA) vs. Fayetteville State and Saint Augustine's vs. Chowan at 8:50 p.m. Early round games will continue on Wednesday morning with Livingstone vs. Elizabeth City State at 10:00 a.m. and Virginia Union vs. Winston-Salem State at 12:10 p.m. Men's quarterfinals will commence at 6:40 p.m. between Virginia State and the winner of Saint Augustine's while Johnson C. Smith awaits their opponent between Lincoln (PA) and Fayetteville State for an 8:50 p.m. contest. On Thursday, the winner between Virginia Union and Winston-Salem State will advance to face Shaw at 7:00 p.m. and Bowie State will play the winner between Livingstone and Elizabeth City State at 9:00 p.m.
