SOUTH BEND, IND. – Two big runs by Notre Dame sealed the fate of the Hampton Pirates on Tuesday night as they fell to the Fighting Irish 84-63 inside Purcell Pavilion in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.
Hampton trailed 23-16 after one quarter as Jermaine Marrow beat the first period buzzer with a layup off a feed from Trevond Barnes. The Irish opened the second quarter on a 16-4 run to open a 39-20 lead on a Matt Farrell 3-pointer with 4:03 left. Hampton trimmed the deficit to 44-34 on a Charles Wilson-Fisher jumper with 37 seconds left in the half.
Notre Dame broke the game wide open with a 20-9 third quarter to take a commanding 66-43 lead. Lysander Bracey closed the scoring in the game and the season for Hampton with a deep 3-pointer for an 84-63 final score.
Jermaine Marrow topped all scorers with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists with only one turnover. Wilson-Fisher dropped 13 points, while Kalin Fisher had 12 points and seven boards for Hampton (19-16).
