In overtime, fourth-seeded Xavier (La.) Wins 16th GCAC Women's Tournament Title
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The fourth-seeded Xavier (La) Gold Nuggets needed an extra frame to topple the #3 seeded Edward Waters Lady Tigers on its home court to earn its conference-best 16th GCAC Tournament Championship, 56-52.
EWC might have lost the contest but it was not the fault of La'Quanza Glover. The All-GCAC First Teamer and All-Defensive Team member was unstoppable as she posted 26 points and 18 rebounds in defeat.
XULA got a pair of double-doubles from Abryhia Irons (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Victory Udechi (12 rebounds, 11 points) while Nina German contributed a game-best seven assists.
EWC will have to hope its resume is good enough to impress both the computers and the selection committee enough to garner an at-large berth in tthe NAIA National Tournement.
The women's basketball selection show will take place on Thursday, March 4 at 6 p.m. CT.
Gold Rush Go Back-To-Back For Xavier Sweep
Second-seeded Xavier (La.) held a slim three-point lead over top-seeded Talladega at intermission but a huge run to begin the second half kept the Tornadoes at bay en route to a 70-60 win and XULA's econd straight championship.
Tony Hutson, named to the All-GCAC First Team yesterday, topped Dega in both points (18) and rebounds (7) while fellow First Teamer Darryl Baker recorded 14 points and seven boards as well.
Rayshawn Mart showed why he was named GCAC Player of the Year, dropping 25 points and eight rebounds to front the Gold Rush, adding three assists to the ledger for good measure.
Talladega should still be comfortably within the (reduced) field of 48 in the NAIA Tournament as they came into the tournament ranked ninth in the nation.
Xavier (La.) was possibly going to sweat out the selection show next week if it did not claim the automatic berth but that is now a moot point with the victory.
The men's basketball selection show will take place on Thursday, March 4 at 7 p.m. CT.
