NEW ORLEANS -- Dillard University has earned the 29th annual Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Thomas Howell Cup.

Each year the cup is awarded to the athletic department that collects the most points across the various sports in which the GCAC sponsors championships.  The cup is named after Thomas Howell, the GCAC's first commissioner.  gcac2015 logo

The Bleu Devils finished the season with 22 points during the 2015-16 academic year, winning the first cup in school history and breaking Xavier University's streak of five consecutive cup wins.

Overall point totals were lower this season as the GCAC did not hold championships in men's/women's cross country, baseball, or softball.

The Bleu Devils earned 10 points in men's competition, just beating out Talladega (9 points).  On the women's side, the Lady Bleu Devils tallied 12 points, good for third in the conference behind the Xavier Gold Nuggets, who finished with 15 points and Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) (14 points).

Dillard's women won the GCAC outdoor track & field championship in April with the men finishing second in both basketball and track.

Dillard edged out Xavier by just 1.5 points in the final Howell Cup standings.  The Gold Rush finished with 20.5 points for second place with Talladega in third with 18.5 points.  SUNO finished in fourth for the second straight year with 18 points with Edward Waters just two points behind in fifth place.  Philander Smith and Tougaloo rounded out the standings.

The Dillard University athletic department is led by Athletic Director Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes.
