BLUEFIELD, WV- The Chowan University men's tennis team etched their names in the history books on Sunday afternoon with a win over West Virginia Wesleyan. The Hawks defeated the Bobcats 5-3 in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship. The win marked the first NCAA Division II post-season victory for Chowan in any sport.
In doubles play, the Hawks grabbed the momentum early. Farid Hajizada/Adi Kaliakperov earned an 8-3 win in #1 doubles play while Mateusz Izycki/Mariano Yeh and Rafael Goncalves/Louis Proulx topped their opponents 8-4 and 8-5 in the #2 and #3 doubles positions, respectively.
Holding a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, the Bobcats picked up three singles wins but Hadjizada and Kaliakperov defeated their opponents in #1 and #4 singles to secure the 5-3 win for the Hawks.
The Hawks take on Bluefield State on Monday at 11am in the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship match.
